A productive disagreement begins with an accurate understanding of what the other person is saying. Without that, both people may give strong answers to positions neither actually holds.
Understanding does not mean agreeing. It means identifying the claim, the reasons behind it, and the concern it is meant to address. This lesson explains how to interpret an argument fairly without inventing support that the speaker has not offered.
