Introduction

You can care about a goal and still struggle to begin the work it requires. The goal may feel distant, the next step may be unclear, or the task may compete with something more immediately rewarding.
Motivation concerns the processes that give activity direction and help initiate or sustain it. It is influenced by what a person values, what they expect to be possible, the costs of acting, and the alternatives available.
This lesson separates several reasons for not starting. The purpose is to address the actual obstacle rather than explain every delay through a lack of desire or character.
