Introduction

Some media files carry information about their creation or editing. Newer systems can attach records designed to reveal certain changes and make parts of that history easier to verify.
Provenance means the origin and history of something. For digital media, it concerns how a file was created, changed, and passed along.
A recorded history can help answer useful questions, but it has limits. Knowing something about a file's production does not automatically establish that the scene, caption, or surrounding claim is true.
