Introduction

We rarely state every part of our reasoning. Ordinary conversation would become exhausting if each sentence had to explain everything it depended on.
However, an unstated step can matter. Two people may agree on the facts but reach different answers because they are making different assumptions. A plan may look sensible until one of those assumptions turns out to be wrong.
Learning to notice assumptions is therefore a way to understand and improve reasoning. It does not require treating every unstated idea as a mistake.
