Introduction

Every day, we decide what to believe and what to do. Some decisions are small: which route to take, whether to carry an umbrella, or how to fix something that has stopped working. Others need more thought, such as choosing a course, judging an important claim, or working through a disagreement.
Reasoning helps us make these decisions by asking a basic question: What gives me a good reason to think this?
We already reason in ordinary life. The purpose of studying reasoning is to understand that process and use it more carefully. We can learn to explain our answers, notice gaps in them, and change them when we discover something new.
